The Captain
This is a rather dry (wiki-style) account of our main characters life, if you preferer to jump right into the romance - START HERE instead.
Captain Arthur Ernest Bentley (born 23 October 1977) is an Australian merchant navy officer and master mariner, raised in the maritime hub of Williamstown, Victoria.
Bentley spent his early life embedded in Melbourne's tall ship restoration movement before pursuing a formal career in international commercial shipping.
Known as a romantic traditionalist among contemporary mariners, Bentley is noted for his dual devotion to rigorous nautical command and botanical illustration, frequently documenting his global voyages through watercolour painting and poetry.
He currently commands an elite, ultra-luxury international boutique cruise yacht.
Early Life and Family Background
Bentley was born at St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, Victoria, the only son of William Bentley Sr. and Eleanor Bentley (née Oakley). His family background bridged Melbourne's working-class maritime industry and its aristocratic, old-money wealth:
- Father: Captain William Bentley Sr. was a prominent Victorian seafaring figure who spent the late 1980s and 1990s serving as the Master of the Alma Doepel, a historic three-masted topsail schooner that operated out of Port Melbourne as the city's premier youth sail-training flagship.
- Mother: Eleanor Beatrice Oakley was descended from a prominent 19th-century Victorian pastoralist and mercantile shipping dynasty. Raised in Toorak, she attended Melbourne Church of England Girls' Grammar School (Merton Hall) and met Bentley Sr. during the initial fundraising campaigns for the Alma Doepel restoration trust (mid-1970s).
I am so grown. If we should meet,
She would pass by me in the street,
Unless my soul’s face let her see
My sense of what she did for me.
- Masefield 1910
While Bentley Sr. gave his son a foundational education in the fierce realities of the sea, it was Eleanor who shaped Arthur's internal world. An avid patron of the arts, Eleanor introduced her son to Romantic literature, British maritime poetry (notably the works of John Masefield and Samuel Taylor Coleridge) and the techniques of plein watercolour painting. She taught him to view the ocean not merely as a commercial highway, but as a vast space of profound spiritual and aesthetic beauty.
Bentley was raised in a Victorian-era sea-captain's cottage on the waterfront in Williamstown. He attended Williamstown Primary school (1984-1989), where he spent wistful afternoons sketching the shifting light of Port Phillip Bay.
Insisting on a classical education, his mother enrolled him at Melbourne Grammar School (1990-1994) for his secondary education. While Bentley excelled in advanced mathematics and physics to satisfy his career ambitions, he became more well known for his romantic sensibilities, often submitting illustrated poetry to the school's literary journals and serving as a ranking student officer in the school's historic Cadet Corps.
'Twas partly love, and partly fear,
And partly 'twas a bashful art,
That I might rather feel, than see,
The swelling of her heart.
- Coleridge 1799
Maritime Education and Career
Upon graduating from secondary school in late 1994, Bentley bypassed traditional university pathways to pursue a commercial deck cadetship, securing competitive sponsorship from BHP Shipping.
Pre-Sea Training and Cadetship (1995-1997)
In early 1995, Bentley relocated to Tasmania to begin his training at the Australian Maritime College (AMC) in Launceston. He completed his foundational residential "Pre-Sea" qualification at the college's Beauty Point campus along the kanamaluka / Tamar River.
During his time in Tasmania, the dramatic, isolated landscapes filled dozens of personal journals with sketches of the rugged coastline and reflective verse. Witnessing the devasting fallout of the Iron Baron oil spill at the mouth of the river in mid-1995 profoundly shifted his worldview, igniting a lifelong commitment to marine conservation and the protection of fragile coastal ecosystems.
The tide writes verses
soft upon the sand.
And time, that thief,
returns them
with a lover's hand.
A brief reply,
a whisper in the air,
The shore remembers
what the waters bear.
- Captain Arthur Bentley 1995
Between 1995 and 1999, he accrued his mandatory qualifying sea time as a cadet aboard BHP bulk steel carriers and roll-on/roll-off cargo vessels, navigating the notorious Bass Strait and international Pacific corridors.
Officer Ranks (1999-2005)
After returning to the AMC to complete his final advanced coursework and passing his rigorous oral examinations in late 1999, Bentley was awarded an unrestricted Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certificate of Competency. Recognised as the dux of his class, he was awarded the college's Captain Thomas Swanson Prize for outstanding undergraduate achievement.
He spent the early 2000s working globally as a Third and Second Navigating Officer on commercial oil tankers and dry bulk fleets. Peers from this era noted that while Bentley was an incredible precise watchkeeper, his off-duty hours were strictly spent painting the foreign ports he visited and drafting poetry inspired by the isolated night watches.
In 2003, having logged the required watchkeeping sea time, he returned again to the Australian Maritime College for senior officer blocks covering ship management, advanced cargo stability and maritime law, successfully earning his Chief Mate (First Officer) license.
The sea, my mother, confides to me,
As she turns to the soft, round moon,
The secrets that lie where the spirits be,
That hide from the garish noon:

Command and Master Mariner Status (2006-Present)
Following three years of service as a Chief Mate responsible for onboard safety management, environmental compliance and complex cargo operations, Bentley crossed the threshold of 36 months of documented sea service in senior roles.
In 2007, at the age of 30, he successfully passed his final master oral boards with AMSA to achieve an unrestricted Master Class 1 Certificate of Competency (Master Mariner). This qualification granted him the legal authority to take absolute command of any commercial vessel of unlimited tonnage anywhere in the world.
While initially commanding commercial logistics vessels, Bentley's unique blend of elite societal upbringing, absolute maritime precision and artistic refinement made him uniquely suited for the the ultra-luxury expedition sector. In 2010, he was appointed Master of an exclusive, global-roaming boutique passenger mega-yacht.
In this role, Bentley commands bespoke global itineraries - navigating remote archipelagos, polar corridors and elite international ports. He is highly regarded by his high-profile international clientele not only for his flawless navigation and safety record, but for his romantic charm, occasionally hosting private showings of his voyage watercolours and readings of his maritime poetry for passengers on board.
As you read these lines, all luxury fades,
A golden cage, built upon the restless deep.
When you turn my page, vanity dies,
My anchor drops to kiss your feet.
- Captain Arthur Bentley 2026
Philanthropy and Associations
Parallel to his career, Bentley remains an active consultant for the preservation of vintage watercraft in Victoria and Tasmania. He serves on the advisory board of the Alma Doepel Restoration Project and returns frequently to Williamstown to mentor younger generations entering the maritime trade. He is a member of the Company of Master Mariners of Australia and the Australian Naval Institute.
However, his dedication to the sea extends beyond heritage into radical conservation. A staunch supporter and financial donor of Sea Shepherds Australia, Bentley actively backs their direct-action ocean defence campaigns.
